Check-in & Check-out

The "Check-in & Check-out" game is a simple method to start and end a process in a symbolic and collaborative way within a team. It allows each group member to be present, seen, and heard, while expressing a reflection or feeling. The "Check-in" emphasizes presence, focus, and group commitment, while the "Check-out" promotes reflection and symbolic closure.

For the "Check-in," participants stand or sit in a circle. Each group member is invited to share something they are starting the activity with. This could be a feeling, a reflection on the previous day, an attitude they bring to the session, or something playful like "the animal that represents my mood today." The check-in question is chosen based on the group and the purpose of the program. Participants take turns sharing, either in order around the circle or randomly. Once everyone has had a chance to speak, the "Check-in" phase is complete.

For the "Check-out," the group remains in a circle. Each member shares something they are leaving with. This could be a feeling, a reflection on the experience, or the most important thing they take away from the session. The check-out question is also tailored to the group and the program's purpose. Participants take turns checking out, either in order around the circle or randomly. Once everyone has had a chance to speak, the "Check-out" phase is complete.

In the context of team building, this game is particularly interesting because it encourages open and honest communication among team members. The "Check-in" helps participants to refocus, fully engage in the activity, and share their mindsets, which strengthens group cohesion from the outset. The "Check-out" allows for collective reflection on the experience, helping to draw lessons and close the session in a positive and meaningful way. This activity also fosters a sense of connection and mutual support, essential for effective team dynamics. By using this method at the beginning and end of the session, participants are more likely to feel valued and heard, which can enhance their engagement and collaboration in the team building context.
