Definitionary

The objective of the game Definitionary is to encourage participants to be creative while discovering new words, all in a fun and competitive atmosphere. Ideal for groups of 4 to 8 players, this game prompts participants to invent definitions for obscure words chosen from a dictionary. The idea is to make learning enjoyable while promoting interaction between players, making it a perfect activity for breaking the ice or strengthening team cohesion.

To organize a Definitionary game effectively, start by dividing players into small groups if you have a large number of participants. You'll need at least one dictionary, along with paper and pens for each player. The game begins when the first player, called the "picker," selects an obscure word from the dictionary and shares it with the other players, spelling it out correctly. If someone already knows the definition, the picker must choose another word. Once the word is selected, each player invents and writes a creative definition of the word on a piece of paper and hands it to the picker. The picker, in turn, writes down the real definition.

After all the definitions have been submitted, the picker reads them aloud, including the real one. Each player then votes for the definition they believe is correct, without voting for their own. The picker does not vote, as they know the true meaning of the word. Players earn points for each vote their fake definition receives, and the picker gains 3 points if no one guesses the correct definition. The game continues until each player has had a turn as the picker, with scores accumulated throughout.

Definitionary is an excellent tool for team-building or as an icebreaker, as it stimulates not only creativity but also strategic thinking and humor. The game encourages interaction and exchange among participants, while promoting cooperation and friendly competition. It also allows players to discover unexpected aspects of their colleagues' personalities, such as their imagination or ability to bluff convincingly. Additionally, by requiring careful listening and analysis of others' proposals, Definitionary strengthens communication and cohesion within the group.
